Description
Raku is an ancient Japanese glazing and firing technique.
I make the miniature vases/bottles on the potter’s wheel in a white stoneware clay, after the item has dried naturally it is then bisque/biscuit fired, a glaze is now applied to the piece, it is placed in my gas fired Raku kiln and fired to 960c-1000c. I then remove the pot with metal tongs, whilst it is red hot and place it in a metal bin filled with sawdust. The sawdust immediately ignites, and the air is restricted, oxygen is drawn from the clay, this produces the black colour in the cracks in the glaze, which is characteristic of Raku. The flames and smoke react with the glaze to create amazing, unique, and unpredictable crazing patterns. The crazing itself is very random and this gives each piece its own unique character.
