Seal, Raku fired

Price:

£58.00

This seal is crafted from white stoneware clay and fired using the ancient Japanese Raku technique. After bisque firing, the piece is glazed and placed in a gas-fired kiln. When red hot, it is transferred into sawdust, where flames and smoke create the dramatic black crackle lines and unique crazing patterns characteristic of Raku.

Description

Raku is an ancient Japanese glazing and firing.

I make these Seals in a white stoneware clay, after the item has dried naturally it is then bisque/biscuit fired, a glaze is now applied to the piece, it is placed in my gas fired Raku kiln and fi. I then remove the pot with metal tongs, whilst it is red hot and place it in a metal bin filled with sawdust. The sawdust immediately ignites, and the air is restricted, oxygen is drawn from the clay, this produces the black colour in the cracks in the glaze, which is characteristic of Raku. The flames and smoke react with the glaze to create amazing, unique, and unpredictable crazing patterns. The crazing itself is very random and this gives each piece its own unique character.

Size 193mm long (nose to tail) and 85mm high

You are purchasing the Seal that is shown in the photos, Each piece is hand made and very individual.

Eco credentials, where possible Nick uses re-cycled packaging when available. The electric and wood fired kilns are fired from 100% renewable energy.

My ceramics are made by hand, so no two pieces will be totally identical, consider them as sisters rather than identical twins. Slight imperfections are a part of handmade pottery and add personality to each piece.
